ABOUT US

The time was late summer; the year was 1955. The persons were Nell Baldwin Rice, Ruth Brown, Cora Fitch and Catherine Taylor. They talked about getting other local Deltas together to form a Wilson chapter. During the next year, with Nell as leader of the group, they located Johnnie Harris, Helen Worsley, Jual P. Anderson, Ethel Allen Woodard, Thelma Parker and Alice Shivers. As the group continued to work, Willie Penn, Mattie Hines, Daisy Hobbs and Edna Lyons Becton were drawn in. This group worked hard in a manner that Ruth Brown described in this statement, which seems to have become the general motto of the chapter, "We'll burn out and die for Delta".

Finally, the forms were filled out, the questions were all answered, the fees were collected, a baby was born, the date was set, and fourteen Deltas were ready to become an official chapter. April 6, 1957, it was done. Jennie D. Taylor, Regional Director, brought the chapter charter, ceremonies, installation, and rejoicing followed. EPSILON OMICRON SIGMA, later renamed WILSON ALUMNAE CHAPTER, DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED, was ushered into the world.

Today, Wilson Alumnae Chapter serves the community, locally and state wide, in a wide variety of ways. They include but not limited to: scholarships, charitable support and donations, the Delta Academy and Delta GEMS, voter registration, political awareness programs, education initiatives, Black Heritage programs, health and awareness programs and various types of public service projects. We now have local, state and national representation on boards of institutions, other non-profit organizations, government, religious and non-sectarian groups. The Delta presence is felt in every facet and lifestyle of the community.
